Menstrual and Menopause Awareness: Breaking the Silence

The Third Eye began its journey of service and empowerment with a heartfelt initiative combining compassion, awareness, and education. This first community outreach event was organized with the on-ground support of Club Avishek, a well-regarded local organization in Kolkata, whose collaboration was integral to the program’s success.

The event was centered around two key missions: distributing warm shawls, and conducting a menstrual hygiene awareness session for young girls in the area. As part of the initiative, sanitary napkins and disposal bags were provided to ensure that girls had not only access to safe products but also the knowledge of how to use and dispose of them responsibly.

For generations, menstruation and menopause have been topics shrouded in silence, often treated as taboo. This lack of open conversation has led to misunderstanding, stigma, and inadequate support for women at crucial stages of their lives.

Menopause is not an illness, and menstruation is not something to be hidden—both are natural biological processes. Yet, the silence around them has made many women feel isolated. It is time to change this narrative.

Open conversations—whether in homes, workplaces, or communities—create an environment where women feel supported and understood. Importantly, these conversations should not be limited to women. Men, as fathers, brothers, partners, colleagues, and community members, play a vital role in building awareness, showing empathy, and advocating for change.

By encouraging a male presence in seminars, workshops, and discussions, we move toward a society where menstrual and menopausal health is normalized, understood, and supported. Breaking these taboos is not just a women’s issue—it is a collective step toward equality, dignity, and well-being for all.
